Katsutoshi Kusume (Toshi) received the Bachelor of Science in Information Science from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan, in 1997. After being enrolled in the graduate course in the Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, he started his study in the course of Master of Science in Communications Engineering (MSCE) at Munich University of Technology, Munich, Germany, in 1999. He has received the Master of Science in Communications Engineering from Munich University of Technology, Munich, Germany, in 2001. He received the degree of Doktor-Ingenieur (Dr.-Ing.) from Munich University of Technology in 2010.

He has received the Werner von Siemens Excellence Award for his master thesis in 2002. In 2009, he received the best paper award of the Signal Processing for Communications Symposium at IEEE GLOBECOM 2009.

In 2002, he joined DOCOMO Communications Laboratories Europe, Munich, Germany (DOCOMO Euro-Labs) as researcher. In 2009, he has been senior researcher of the Wireless Technologies Research Group. In June 2011 he joined Radio Access Network Development Department of NTT DOCOMO Inc., in Kanagawa, Japan, as assistant manager. In December 2012, he came back to DOCOMO Euro-Labs and became manager since January 2013.

In January 2018, he joined Intel Corporation as Senior System Engineer in Munich, Germany. Since April 2019, he became Senior Member of Technical Staff.

Since December 2019, he is System Engineer at Apple in Munich, Germany, as the majority part of smartphone business of Intel was transitioned to Apple.

His main technical interests include 4G, 5G/NR, transmit processing techniques, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, iterative (turbo) processing, multiuser detections, and waveform designs. He has been a delegate at 3GPP RAN1 meetings with focuses on the downlink MIMO processing for Rel-10 LTE-Advanced and on the device-to-device (D2D) proximity services (ProSe) for Rel-12.

Between June 2013 and April 2015, he served as Work Package 1 (WP1) leader of the European project METIS, "Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for Twenty-twenty (2020) Information Society", co-funded by the European Commission as an Integrated Project under the Seventh Framework Programme for research and development (FP7). Since July 2015 he was involved in the European project METIS-II for two years.
